Non-Residential Charges

Non-Residential Sewer Service Charges

Following two years of detailed financial and engineering studies, and after ten public meetings to review progress, Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary approved a new five-year sewer rate plan on July 7, 2014.

The District put a high value on public input and worked with interested members of the public for two full years. Extensive customer input helped the District create rates that are both fair and stable so the District can continue to protect public health and the environment through high quality sanitary services.

How Non-Residential Sewer Service Charges Are Calculated

The sewer service charge for a non-residential customer is calculated individually based upon the volume and strength of the customer's sewage measured in Equivalent Dwelling Units (EDUs) multiplied by the annual sewer service charge rate in effect.

Effective July 1, 2014 for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the non-residential sewer service charge is $770 per EDU per year (the same as the single family rate).

In unincorporated areas an additional Supplemental Charge is added to the amount shown above (click for details)

Non-Residential EDUs = Flow Factor Multiplied Times Strength Factor

EDUs are based on the customer's annualized water usage (in units of 100-cubic feet of water) multiplied by the customer's strength factor (contact the District for your strength factor). The formula to calculate your annual charge is shown below.

Flow factor =

  • Annualized metered water use, converted to gallons per day divided by the standard flow rate of 200 gallons per day per EDU

Strength factor =

  • 1.00 for low strength(Example: residences, offices, general retail and institutional occupancies),
  • 1.70 for medium strength(Example: delicatessens and markets with delicatessens)
  • 2.40 for high strength customers (Example: restaurants and bakeries)

Commercial Charge = (Charge per EDU) x (flow factor) x (strength factor)
